Congregational Care

DEACONS

The office of Deacon is an ordained position in the Presbyterian Church. The ministry of deacons as set forth in Scripture is one of "compassion, witness and service." The Board of Deacons consists of 24 members whose primary ministry is for the compassion and care of the members of First Presbyterian. Each deacon is assigned a Parish Outreach Group with the charge to develop a personal and intentional relationship with each family/member in the group. This creates the basis for information sharing, awareness of pastoral care needs, and the life and activities surrounding the congregation. Through regular contact, the Deacons keep up with the well-being of our members, offering support, assistance and prayer.

FAITH COMMUNITY NURSING & HEALTH MINISTRY

Faith Community Nursing (FCN) is a healing ministry focusing on the intentional care of the spirit in the promotion of health and the prevention and minimization illness. Susan Pierce and Michelle Phelan provide their expertise and experience as our Faith Community Nurses and we welcome members to contact them. FCNs are “translators” between the faith community and the health community. Our ministry is defined by the specific needs of the FPC congregation, individually and collectively. We have also recently formed a Health Ministry Committee to address other programming for the congregation, such as periodic health information nights, support groups, blood pressure checks and more. Click HERE for a detailed list of the points below. In response to these needs, we seek to serve you as:

  • Integrators of faith and health
  • Health advocates
  • Health educators
  • Health counselors
  • Support group developers
  • Volunteer trainers
  • Referral agents

CONGREGATIONAL LIFE

PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN

Presbyterian Women (PW) is the women's organization of the Presbyterian Church (USA). The purpose of Presbyterian Women is to nurture our faith through prayer and Bible study; to support the mission of the church worldwide; to work for justice and peace; and to build an inclusive, caring community of women that strengthens the Presbyterian Church(USA) and witnesses the promise of God's Kingdom.

Here at First Presbyterian, our PW Circles deliver flowers to members who are hospitalized, in nursing homes or home-bound; deliver meals monthly; work with the Congregational Life Ministry by assisting with hospitality needs at FPC events; establish books dedicated to pastoral care in our library; work with the Deacons to develop tailored communication with homebound members; and seek opportunities for service within the church, our neighborhood and the community at large.

If you are interested in finding out more about Presbyterian Women at FPC or would like to join one of our many PW Circle Groups, please contact the church office at 318-222-0604.
