ProjectWorship-On Sunday, May 16th, we will be moving our worship service to the chapel. Two services will be held in the chapel at 8:30 AM and 11:00 AM. We will be in the chapel until the sanctuary re-opens after the renovation process.
Parking-As the building is undergoing renovations, Members and Visitors should be aware of any changes in parking or accessing the parking lots. If you have questions or concerns, please call the office at 318.222.0604.
Handicap Parking
Handicap parking can be accessed from the west driveway near the chapel. Please use caution when entering and exiting this lot, as it is used for both an entrance and an exit.
Parking Entrances
Members and Visitors may enter the church parking lots from Jordan or Stoner. The entrance near the CE Building is a ONE WAY entrance only.
Parking Exits
All Members and Visitors parked behind the church must exit the church onto Stoner. Members and Visitors parked near the chapel, using the west parking lot will exit onto Jordan.
Rose Window-The construction process has brought about new discoveries about the condition of the Rose Window. Frank Dodson explores the restoration process in his article. Click here to read about the Rose Window.
Sanctuary Construction- Between now and Advent, some of you may miss sitting in “your” pew in the sanctuary. If so, Mark Williamson has arranged a trip on every other Saturday morning to Murphy Bonded Warehouse (where our pews are being stored) so that you can sit for a while and meditate or nap, depending upon your custom. The pews will be “touched up” as necessary as part of the renovations to the sanctuary. I know that “your” pew looks forward to being returned to pristine condition and to being reunited with you and our sanctuary on the first Sunday in Advent. The organ console has been moved in preparation for the changes in the chancel. It will remain in the sanctuary during the renovations and will be covered and moved as necessary to make sure it is protected.
The sanctuary chandeliers are in the process of being removed and will be stored at Wilhite Electric where they will all be re-wired. No trips to visit the chandeliers are currently planned. Stay tuned...
May 9, 2010 was our last Sunday to worship in the sanctuary before the renovation work began there. The service was sublime and emotional.....hymns, music, sermon, liturgy, prayers—all complementing each other and each being exceptional in its own right. There had been a wedding in the sanctuary on Saturday night and a baptism on that Sunday morning, both of which, for many members, brought to mind weddings, baptisms, funerals, and other significant moments in their own memories and experiences in that sanctuary. The stripping of the chancel was done by the young people of the church, yet another act pointing to the future and another reminder of one of the many reasons we are undertaking this project. The "yard sale"
on Saturday May 29 found new homes for old furniture, toys and equipment from the Children’s Building that was scheduled to be replaced as part of the Fulfilling the Vision project. Church members had the first hour of shopping to themselves and picked up some nifty bargains and memorabilia. The sale opened to the public after that, and it was well attended. The sale raised about $2500 that will be plowed back into the CE Building furnishings. Thanks to everyone who helped to make the sale a success, with special thanks to Margaret McDermott and to Mary Anne Selber, Jean Sayres and their helpers, Leonard and Jerry.
If you take a look at the sanctuary roof, you will notice that the contractor is in the process of installing lightning protection for the sanctuary. This new feature for our church was added to the project at the insistence of the preachers, particularly Sarah Cooper Searight in her first ordained call. After checking out the lightning protection, walk around to the front of the sanctuary and see the fresh, dare I say youthful, face of the church after the cleaning away of many years worth of dirt and grime from the limestone facade. If you come back inside, be sure to stick your head in the sanctuary and see where the water-damaged plaster has been taken back to the brick as part of the ongoing repairs to the sanctuary. On your outside tour, be sure to check out the garden area between L-6 and the Presbyterian Women’s suite. One of our new Marvin, energy-efficient, low maintenance windows has been installed by the window supplier to let us see how they look and to check sizing issues related to the window openings. You won’t have much trouble picking out which one is the new window.
